Another feature of AIX that distinguishes it from some other Unixs is the quality of it's administrative GUI interface. This interface is available both as a Motif / X-Windows application and as a text based menu system. When invoked with the "smit" command, the system will start the Motif version "msmit" if a $DISPLAY variable is set, or will invoke "smitty", the text based version otherwise.
